Unlucky Umbrella Studios Founder Kasandra Murray Featured on The Ops Authority Podcast: Unpacking Operations, AI, and the Future of the Printing Industry
Columbus, Ohio | August 10, 2026 — Kasandra Murray, founder of Unlucky Umbrella Studios and a fractional CMO and COO for businesses in the printing industry, was recently featured on The Ops Authority Podcast in an episode titled "Inside the Printing Industry with Kasandra Murray: Systems, AI, and Growth."
The conversation goes straight at a problem most businesses feel but few can name: why good employees leave, and what actually makes them stay. Murray shared a story from her own background in the printing industry, where a shop assumed it had a retention problem because employees only stayed two to three years. When they brought it up to an industry president, he laughed. Six months was the norm. What that shop had built, without fully realizing it, was a training program strong enough to double and triple typical retention.
"People want to be good at what they do," Murray said. "The only way you can give them that confidence is through really strong training."
The episode covers more than retention. Murray walks through the client onboarding breakdowns she sees most often in the printing industry, where estimators, customer service, and sales teams work disconnected from each other, and details fall through the cracks. She also shares a real client story about a growing PTO liability that had nothing to do with policy and everything to do with how the team was actually working, and the simple fix that dropped overtime costs while raising morale.
On AI, Murray takes a clear-eyed view. She shares an example of AI turning a 3,500-page maintenance manual from the 1980s into a searchable digital tool, links to the original scans included, so nothing gets invented along the way. Her take: AI should handle the repetitive work so people can focus on what's creative, strategic, and human. It should never replace individuals, as AI has no reason to avoid mistakes and can’t be held accountable, unlike people.
Murray closes the episode with advice for anyone stepping into operations, in printing or any other industry: build strong project management skills first, then go all in on documentation. Centralized, searchable systems, she says, beat a manual on a shelf or a notebook in someone's desk drawer every time.
